Welcoming a Malamute into your home is a commitment to the training and care of that dog for its whole life. Regular grooming and training help maintain a happy and healthy pet.
Training
Malamutes are incredibly intelligent and perceptive animals. Many find them to be stubborn, but in reality, they are independent thinkers, an essential trait to survive in the Arctic. Malamutes are incredibly willing to work when given the time and effort.
Trust takes time to build, but once you have established a relationship with your malamute, it makes a world of difference. Always remember you and your dog are working together to get to a goal; it's not you vs. your dog.
Many malamutes have been trained to do therapy work, conformation, a long list of sports, and much more! Understanding why a malamute's brain works the way it does is helpful to figuring out a training plan that works for your team.
The malamute's thick double coat should be regularly brushed to remove dead coat, but never shaved. Due to its double coat nature, it may seem necessary to shave a malamute to help keep the dog cool in the summer. This is untrue! The malamute coat, while insulative in the winter, provides protection from the hot sun in the summer months.
On top of regular brushing, malamutes should have their nails trimmed and teeth brushed on a regular schedule. They should be bathed regularly as well, helping to prevent large coat shed and keep the coat clean and healthy.
Whether you are grooming at home or have found a qualified groomer to help, training your dog around grooming procedures is essential. This helps reduce the stress for both you and your pup when it comes to grooming.
